A free activity for a quiet watch

Birdwatching bingo, without the bird-name quiz.

Pick a card, find a comfortable watching spot and notice what birds do. These four different cards use actions, so you can enjoy a window watch even when you do not know a single species name.

Both files contain the same four unique cards, A-D, on two pages. Free download. No signup, payment or email address required.

Play birdwatching bingo on your phone

No printer needed. Choose one of the same four cards as the PDFs, then tap an action only when you see it. Tap again to undo. The middle square is already marked.

  1. FREE · already marked

Card A: 0 of 8 actions marked. Three squares in a row, column or diagonal make bingo.

Each card keeps its own marks while this page stays open. Reset clears the selected card; reloading clears all four. Your ticks are not sent to us. Prefer paper? The free PDF downloads above contain these same cards.

Preview of bingo cards A and B, each with eight bird-action prompts and a free middle square. The PDF also includes cards C and D.
Cards A and B are on page 1; C and D are on page 2. The original layout uses mostly white space to keep home printing simple.

How to play

  1. Print your preferred paper size at 100% or Actual size, in portrait. Each page has two cards; cut between them if you want to share.
  2. Choose A, B, C or D. Mark the middle square first: it is a free space.
  3. Watch from one spot and add a pencil dot when you see an action. A single bird can count for more than one square if you see each action.
  4. Three marked squares across, down or diagonally make bingo. You can also skip winning and simply compare what everyone noticed.

You do not need to finish a card in one visit. Keep the unchecked squares for another quiet watch.

Make a window watch part of a small gift

For a short activity together, read our window-watch plan for two. It explains how to choose different cards and compare what each person notices.

Choosing a physical gift for a bird lover? Our mug and T-shirt comparison gives the current listed prices, garment measurements, mug capacity and production terms. It links to both products on Bonanza so you can choose a format that suits the recipient.

Print two cards, choose a window seat and suggest a short birdwatching break together. If you want a separate physical gift, compare our Backyard Birds and Nuthatch Garden mugs. You can also browse our mug collection.

The bingo PDFs are free standalone downloads. No mug purchase is needed. Physical gifts are sold separately on Bonanza, where you can check photos, availability, shipping and the total before paying.

For a smaller physical gift, the single Backyard Birds vinyl sticker is $18.99 USD, with shipping to supported US addresses included, before any checkout tax. The bingo downloads remain free and separate from shop purchases.

What you will be watching for

The cards rearrange and mix these twelve prompts. They describe visible actions rather than calls or species, so binoculars and bird-identification apps are optional.

  • A bird lands on a branch
  • A bird takes off from its perch
  • A bird hops along the ground
  • A bird turns its head
  • A bird cleans its feathers
  • A bird holds something in its beak
  • Two birds sit near each other
  • A bird walks along the ground
  • A bird stretches one wing
  • A bird moves into leafy cover
  • A bird pecks at a surface
  • A bird opens its beak

Prefer writing notes to playing bingo? Use the free backyard bird observation sheet instead.

Let the birds choose the pace

Keep your distance and watch without trying to make a bird perform an action. Do not approach nests, chase birds, leave food or play calls for the game. Stay on permitted paths and follow local rules. Children should watch with an adult.

A quiet session with only one marked square is still worthwhile. For more guidance, read the American Birding Association's birding ethics code. This studio activity is independent and is not an ABA or bird-count programme.

Before you print

Do I need to live in a particular country?

No named species appear on these cards. Use the prompts for birds you can actually observe where you are. Some actions may not appear during your visit; there is no promise that every square can be completed.

How are the four cards different?

Each card has a different selection or arrangement of eight actions and the same free middle square. Both paper-size downloads contain all four cards, not four extra cards in each size.

Can I print copies for a class or family group?

Yes, you may print and copy the original PDFs for personal or classroom use. Please share this download page when passing the activity on, and do not resell the PDFs. No observations are sent to us: your paper notes stay with you.

Is this a bird identification guide?

No. It is a simple observation game. Use a reliable local field guide if you want to identify a bird, and leave an uncertain identification open.
