Free SVG Size Checker — mm, Inches and viewBox

Read an SVG's declared canvas size in millimetres and inches before importing it into a design or cutting app. Choose a local file or type its width, height and viewBox.

The file is read in your browser. This tool does not upload, display, execute or change your SVG.

Or check values manually

What does the result mean?

A file with width="150mm" height="150mm" viewBox="0 0 150 150" declares a 150 × 150 mm canvas. The viewBox describes its coordinate system; its numbers do not establish millimetres on their own.

width="600" uses the CSS pixel interpretation here: 600 ÷ 96 × 25.4 = 158.75 mm. Absolute CSS unit relationships come from the W3C CSS units specification. This is a header check, not a measurement of the visible drawing or cut paths.

Check the imported size before cutting

  1. Unzip the download and choose the actual cut-layer SVG, rather than a PNG preview.
  2. Read the intended dimensions in the creator's instructions and inspect the file's header here.
  3. Import the file, then compare the app's displayed width and height with the intended size. For a layered design, apply the same proportional scale to every layer.
  4. Use a scrap of your intended material for a small test before committing to the complete design.

Cutting apps can interpret files differently. Fonts, linked images, patterns, path complexity, material and machine settings need separate checks. Cricut's upload instructions and unsupported-items guide explain its own workflow.

A 150 mm layered-paper example

Our Quiet Wader download contains three separate cut-layer SVGs with a shared 150 × 150 mm canvas, plus reference files and instructions. The artwork is AI-assisted. Its digital geometry has been checked; physical cutting, assembly and machine compatibility have not been tested.

Common SVG sizing questions

Can a viewBox tell me the print size?

Not by itself. A viewBox such as 0 0 150 150 gives proportions and coordinates. An explicit canvas size, an embedding context or your app's chosen import size is still needed.

Does an SVG need 300 DPI?

Pure vector paths do not have a fixed pixel resolution. Raster images embedded inside an SVG still have their own pixel limits. This checker does not assess those images.

Will this fix or certify a cut file?

No. It reads header dimensions and flags a few limitations. It does not measure path bounds, repair geometry, validate a machine workflow or predict a physical cutting result.
